The sleek oval trash can features an infrared motion sensor that detects when your hand is within 10 inches near the black lid. It opens to let you to throw out your trash and then it closes automatically when you remove your hand. The sensor is located at the top of the trash can, and motion must be above the sensor in order to activate the lid.
